Established in 1982 by a group of Chinese American families, Tidewater Chinese School (TCS) is a non-profit tax exempt organization recognized by IRS. We have been providing Chinese language education and cultural services to local community in the Tidewater Area of Virginia for over three decades. We try to keep tuition low to make the Chinese Language and Culture Education affordable to the people who like to learn Chinese in Tidewater area.
TCS is run by parents through an elected Board of Directors. Through service on the Board of Directors, parents work in partnership with the School Directors to manage the school operations. This format encourages interaction between the faculty and parents as well as among parents. This interaction creates a strong, supportive school community, and greatly benefits both the students and families. All parents are eligible candidates of the school board which is composed of nine members including a principal and a vice principal, a treasurer and a board chairman. The election of the school board is specified in TCS BYLAWS.
Currently, we have approximately 22 classes with 180 students. We have a faculty team dedicated solely to our students. The school meets every Saturday afternoon. The culture classes starts at 1:00 PM and last for 1 hour, followed by 2 hours of language course. There are two semesters (Spring and Fall) each academic year following the regular schedule of the Public School system in this area. The Fall semester spans from early September to late December, and Spring semester spans from early January to late June. In addition to regular Chinese language courses in both simplified and traditional Chinese, we offer cultural courses such as folk dance, Chinese chess, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese music instrument, chorus, martial arts, etc.
