About Us/校史简介 The Tidewater Chinese School (a.k.a. TCS) was established in 1982 by a group of enthusiastic parents in Hampton Roads area. They saw the need to provide opportunities for our youngsters and other interested individuals to study the Chinese language and culture. The number of classes has grown from three to seventeen in the past 27 years. We currently have over 160 students enrolled for the semester of fall 2008, including students from different ethnic backgrounds. They come from Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Peninsula area. The classes are held on the second and third floor of the BAL Building at the Old Dominion University from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday. The fall semester starts on the Saturday before the Labor Day and ends in December, and the spring semester begins in January and finishes in May. Students are assigned to different classes based on their proficiency in Chinese. We also have classes for the adults who like to learn Chinese. The minimum requirement is five years old or above. All the board members of the school are volunteers from the parents. We try to keep tuition low to make the Chinese Language and Culture Education affordable to the people in this area who like to learn Chinese. We have the simplified and the traditional Chinese classes to meet the Chinese Education needs. We also provide Chinese history, geography, culture class, Martial Arts class, Tai-chi and Chinese Folk Dancing Class. We have TCS Newsletter for reporting TCS event and introducing Chinese Culture.
